A Journey of Endurance, Resilience, and Growth
Last Friday, I found myself engaged in a conversation with a curious attendant at Decathlon about my passion for hiking. It all started in 2021 when one of my gym instructors introduced me to Karura, and we began upto 21KM runs to build endurance. Little did I know that this would lead to an unforgettable hiking experience at the Sleeping Warrior, Ugali, and Saucer in Gilgil. I’ve since set a target of completing 12 hikes this year, each journey serving to conquer not only the trails but also my mind and soul.
But what’s life! It never goes according to plan. Three weeks ago, I returned from Rwanda suffering from severe food poisoning. It was an unexpected setback, and all that mattered at that moment was my well-being. Sadly, I had to miss a hike to the Seven Ponds in the Aberdares that I was eagerly anticipating. As they say, however, when life throws challenges at you, it’s essential to adapt and bounce back stronger.
Conquering Elephant Hill was as such a significant milestone for me. Despite not having trained for three weeks and dealing with health issues, my determination to summit prevailed. Setting out at 3:30 AM, I was driven by a singular goal – to reach the summit. For me, hiking is not about shedding weight but about conquering my mind, nourishing my soul, and finding satisfaction in the journey. The 9.5 km Elephant Hill hike trail starts at the Njabini Forest Station gate, at an elevation of 8,202ft (2,500m) above sea level, and ends at the summit, at an elevation of 12,000ft (3,658m) above sea level. The terrain is mostly wet and slippery within the bamboo forest, and rocky as you approach the summit.
The hike to Elephant Hill was a memorable one. Beginning early allowed us to set our pace, with some swift climbers (Subarus) reaching the summit in under 2 hours. As I continue working on my endurance, I may not be the fastest during the ascent, but I make up for it on my way down. The trail, while polite during dry weather, poses its challenges, with unexpected hills and rough, rocky corners.
Every hike offers valuable lessons, and this one was no different. Although physically unfit due to recent health issues, my mental preparation was instrumental in my successful summit. It is true what they say – the body follows the mind. To enhance future hikes, I plan to pack light, carrying only the essentials like a raincoat, a small packet of biscuits, nuts, and a liter of water.
A successful hike is also dependent on having the right gear. Investing in proper equipment might be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be rushed. My companions complained about the bamboo section of the trail, but having the right gear, my focus and enjoyment kept me from even noticing its length. The most challenging part for me, however, was the stretch between the starting point and the KWS office. I even questioned if we were on the right track.
Conquering Elephant Hill was a transformative experience that extended far beyond reaching the summit; it became a testament to the power of resilience, adaptability, and the profound joy of exploring the great outdoors. As I continue on my journey of personal growth, I wholeheartedly encourage you to discover your own passion and set forth on a path of self-discovery through hiking or any other pursuit that ignites your soul. Remember, it’s not just about reaching a destination, but cherishing and learning from the entire journey.
I must, however, admit that I didn’t find The Elephant Hill as challenging as it’s often perceived, perhaps because I began my hiking journey this year with Rurimeria, which became my benchmark. Every adventure builds upon the last, shaping us into stronger, more confident hikers.
As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves seeking refreshment at the Njambini Forest Station, where an enterprising ranger offered us the luxury of a hot water shower for a mere Ksh. 100. After indulging in this simple yet satisfying comfort, we gathered with my team for a hearty meal of Ugali, Nyama, and cabbage at Njambini town before beginning our journey back to Nairobi. The camaraderie and shared experiences of the day added a special flavor to the meal, making it a memorable ending to an unforgettable adventure.
Happy hiking, fellow explorers! May each trail you conquer bring you closer to nature’s wonders and to the depths of your own potential. Embrace the challenges, savor the victories, and cherish the memories created along the way. Here’s to many more unforgettable journeys of growth, resilience, and self-discovery.
