Transformative Trails: A Journey of Resilience and Self-Discovery
Over a year has passed since the election loss that reshaped the course of my life. This tumultuous year resembled a rough roller-coaster ride, I encountered the most shattered version of myself. Yet amidst these challenges, I discovered the power of resilience – the ability to fight back, to mend, and to evolve. Nature, with its unspoiled beauty, became my refuge, and hiking, in particular, emerged as my guiding compass back to my true path.
Hiking instilled a renewed sense of order into my life. The ritual of preparing for a hike, meticulously organizing everything the night before, and ensuring that my checklist was complete mirrored the discipline I began to apply to my everyday life. This newfound structure not only improved my productivity but also fostered a profound sense of empowerment.
The decision to hike Oldoinyo Lesatima Dragon’s Teeth trail was both serendipitous and deliberate. Joining the Outdoorers group, predominantly comprised of strangers, was an adventurous leap into the unknown. Fortunately, fate intervened, and I found two familiar faces among the group. While some friends assured me the hike would be a breeze, one of these acquaintances contradicted this notion, labeling it a formidable challenge. It was at that moment that I remembered I was yet to secure an evacuation cover, and that I hadn’t taken a moment to pray before setting off.
Even as obstacles mounted, my resolve to summit remained unshaken. Memories of past failures and advice from fellow hikers loomed large. This time, determination replaced hesitation. With unwavering focus, I conquered the peak in an astonishing two hours. The “next time” clause from the Outdoorer’s creed dissolved in the face of my determination.
Preparing for such expeditions demands both physical and mental dedication. My regimen consists of regular gym workouts and weekend runs in the serene Karura Forest. Dietary diligence, including collagen supplements and nourishing broth, sustains my body. On the day of the hike, a hearty breakfast fortifies me, accompanied by ample hydration. Recognizing my weaknesses in ascent, I capitalized on my strengths in plateau and descent for recovery.
Distinct experiences emerge when comparing hikes organized by companies like Outdoorers with those by gyms. The former often prioritize resourcefulness and the hike itself, offering fruits, water, and glucose. You also leave as soon as you finish. Gym-organized hikes, on the other hand, feel like a family gathering. Many participants share existing relationships, and we wait for everyone to finish before coming together to share a meal. The spirit of camaraderie is alive in both scenarios. I’ve learned to embrace the world with an open heart, allowing me to appreciate the beauty of both experiences.
Oldoinyo Lesatima, soaring at 4,001 meters, stands as Aberdares’ pinnacle, Kenya’s third-highest peak. A paradise of scenic beauty, it beckons adventurers from two access points: Mweiga’s Wandare Trail, the tougher of the two which awaits my future conquest, and Rhino and Shamata Gates (Mt. Satima Dragon’s Teeth Hike).
My fifth hike in 2023 signified more than a physical accomplishment; it encapsulated my journey from vulnerability to strength. The past year, marked by loss and renewal, substantiated the belief that adversity molds character. Through nature’s embrace and the challenges of the trail, I’ve evolved into an empowered self. As I gaze back at this transformative expedition, I find solace in knowing that life’s harshest trials can pave the way to one’s most authentic and remarkable self.
